Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States. Late Saturday morning, after days of tallying votes across the country following Election Day earlier in the week, major media outlets called the race for Biden, with no path remaining for Trump to get to the 270 electoral votes that he would need to win the presidency. Trump doesn’t seem like he is prepared to leave office under peaceful pretenses. Shortly before the major networks called the race for Biden, Trump angrily took to Twitter, where he proclaimed, in all-caps, that he had “WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!” which is unequivocally false. The (soon-to-be former!!!) president of the United States is willfully delusional.
The Trump campaign has pulled out all the stops to try and blunt the reality of the harsh truth that tens of millions of Americans turned out against them. They have challenged the vote-tallying process in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and elsewhere, and they have slung totally baseless and completely merit-less allegations of fraud. Trump has falsely alleged, for instance, that Republican ballot-counting watchers were excluded from the process, and he has insisted that “BAD THINGS” happened while these ballot-counting watchers weren’t present. Republican ballot-counting watchers were not systematically excluded. “BAD THINGS” did not happen. Donald Trump lost.
Nevertheless, Trump’s team’s fight is continuing. On Saturday, Trump announced that a press conference would be held at “Four Seasons” in Philadelphia — but the location, it turns out, was not the Four Seasons hotel, and the hotel stepped in to correct the (soon-to-be former!!!!) president. The hotel posted a message on Twitter in which they insisted that they weren’t the venue for the event. In fact, it turns out, the venue was to be a landscaping company in Philadelphia called Four Seasons Total Landscaping. The baseless cries of “fraud!” from the Trump campaign have been reduced to sideshows at a random Philadelphia lawn company.
It’s worth noting — Donald Trump’s so far refusal to concede the race has no actual legal weight. He can shout at the top of his lungs that he’s the true and rightful president of the United States, but his most desperate lies don’t change reality. He issued an angry statement (that might’ve been pre-prepared) after the networks called the race for Biden, but he’s just wrong. Being loud doesn’t equal being correct.
