President Biden Upstages Trump During Tuesday Message To America

The two new leaders of these United States walked to the microphone today and projected a calm, confident air quelling an uneasy nation that has been living in four years of uncertainty and, yes, tragedy. Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris introduced President-elect Joe Biden Tuesday for a brief speech followed by some questions.

The first thing Biden talked about was health care, reminding Americans that he understands deeply and personally about what illness does to a family. He lost his eldest son, Beau Biden, to cancer in 2015. He explained that as president there are many things he can do to help people access Obamacare (ACA/The Affordable Care Act).

He said that there is nothing Americans can’t do if they work together, according to The New York Times:

‘Let us be the nation that we know we can be. A nation united, a nation strengthened, a nation healed.’

Even as the Republicans have refused to congratulate the man who will become president on January 20, he anticipates they will come around. He said he was everyone’s president, even those who did not vote for him, that he will treat them all like family. Biden said that Donald Trump’s refusal to accept his own loss simply does not matter. He and Harris have already begun the transition.

When reporters asked him about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying that this is a reelection, Biden laughed. That spoke volumes. Americans can take a great deal of comfort from his place in their lives. He talked about “kitchen table matters” that people care about, that we need to get people some money during this time of job loss and health care for the coronavirus as a right, not a privilege.

The man who will be president projected the air of authority of a president, which is so refreshing to people after four years of trying to keep pace with a Mad Hatter.

Even as the president-elect spoke, the Supreme Court upheld most of the Affordable Care act. The entire nation is rapidly shifting with change toward optimism and opportunity.

Biden has taken calls from a number of foreign leaders and more to call back. Asked what he said to them, the president-elect responded:

‘America’s back.’

According to The Washington Post, he spoke withBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who each called to congratulate him on his victory, according to the president-elect’s transition team:”

‘First of all, I’m letting them know that America is back. We’re going to be back in the game. It’s not America alone. I feel confident that we’re going to be able to put America back in a place of respect that it had before.’

Great Britain’s Prime Minister Johnson tweeted earlier:

‘I just spoke to @JoeBiden to congratulate him on his election. I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities — from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic.’

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau posted this message:

‘We’ve worked with each other before, and we’re ready to pick up on that work and tackle the challenges and opportunities facing our two countries — including climate change and COVID-19…President-elect @JoeBiden and I agreed to keep in touch and work closely together.’
