Trump’s Secretary Of State Announces Transition To Illegal 2nd Term

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has endorsed a challenge to the legitimacy of the results of the recent presidential election, and he has simultaneously expressed unfounded apparent confidence that these challenges will result in the election getting handed to Trump. There is no evidentiary basis for the Trump team’s challenges to the election results, making Pompeo’s confident endorsement of a challenge to these results little more than political theater. The problem is that democracy itself hangs in the balance — in any other country, plenty of observers likely wouldn’t find any problem with characterizing a regime as authoritarian if it outright rejected election results on the basis of evidence-less fraud allegations.

Pompeo quipped about an imminent “smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” but this comment seems to have been meant as a so-called joke. In reality, threatening the foundation of the American democratic process on the basis of craven political maneuvering is not trivial. Pompeo said as follows:

‘There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration. We’re ready. The world is watching what is taking place. We’re going to count all the votes. When the process is complete, the electors will be selected. There’s a process — the Constitution lays it out pretty clearly. The world should have every confidence that the transition necessary to make sure the State Department is functional today, successful today, and successful with the president’s who’s in office on January 20th, a minute after noon will also be successful.’

Pompeo subsequently claimed that global observers “understand that this takes time,” and he spoke of the need to make sure that only legal votes are factored into results — but this need has been met. There is no present danger of illegal votes getting systematically included in U.S. election results. Pompeo is misrepresenting basic reality when he treats this issue as an open question.

Also — actually, the world is moving right on without Trump! Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, both of whom are top U.S. allies, have already personally spoken with President-elect Biden, and many leaders have shared their public congratulations for the Democratic ticket. Pompeo’s attempt to muster some kind of global backing for his challenge to the election results is largely baseless. The Trump team and their Republican enablers are alone in their deluded attempt to tear apart the election results.

Few, if any of the Trump team’s bombastic claims about supposed election fraud have any real support. Trump, for instance, has claimed that “BAD THINGS” have happened while Republican observers have been systematically excluded from watching the ballot tabulation process. In reality, Republican observers have not been systematically shut out.

During a recent appearance on Fox, top Trump ally Rudy Giuliani seemed to reveal how far that Trump’s allies really are willing to go — he suggested that there could have been an “order” from the top for local Democratic officials to fabricate Biden votes and suppress Trump voters. There is absolutely zero evidence for this claim.
