Trump has always had a scratchy relationship with the press. In his first foray before the media, saying the sitting POTUS was a bit touchy is an understatement. When he first began running for president in late 2015, he appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show. Joe Scarborough was talking to Trump about Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Scarborough argued:
‘But, again: He kills journalists that don’t agree with him.’
Trump replied:
‘Well, I think that our country does plenty of killing, too, Joe.’
Later, when then-candidate Trump was asked about condemning the killing of journalists, he gave a mixed message response:
‘Oh sure. Absolutely…I’ve always felt fine about Putin. He’s a strong leader. He’s a powerful leader.’
The sitting US president has attacked journalists at every opportunity. The first time that Donald Trump took questions from reporters since he lost the presidency to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, things did not go well.
It all started when Trump responded to a reporter’s question about conceding the election to President-elect Joe Biden should the Electoral College validate Biden’s victory. While the president was responding, Reuters reporter Jeff Mason interrupted him:
POTUS turned on the journalist. He called the reporter a “lightweight,” and continued as a parent reprimanding a wayward child might, “I’m the president of the United States:”
‘Don’t talk to me that way, you’re just a lightweight, don’t talk to me that way” Trump told the reporter as he pointed at him. “I’m the president of the United States. Don’t ever talk to the president that way.’
