Trump Unveils Black Voter Conspiracy Theory During Sunday Meltdown

Outgoing President Donald Trump sounded totally unhinged during a Sunday morning appearance on the Fox News program Sunday Morning Futures with host Maria Bartiromo. At one point, he suggested that the FBI and Department of Justice may be involved in the widespread, nationwide fraud that he has claimed plagued the recent presidential election. There is absolutely zero meaningful evidence for this claim — the idea is ludicrous. Did that stop the president? Nope, not in the slightest. At this point, is there any sector of society outside of his own base that Trump thinks isn’t conspiring against him? The self-delusion seems staggering.

Trump has pointed to post-Election Day changes in vote tallies as supposedly automatically suspicious because of their timing. The problem is that there’s nothing automatically suspicious about post-election updates to vote tallies. In modern American elections, authorities have essentially always taken some time to work through and eventually certify results. This time around, in some areas, legislation barred authorities from even counting mail-in votes before Election Day. Does Trump not understand these facts? What on earth is going on here?

Trump ignorantly ranted to Bartiromo, in part, as follows:

‘What happened, if you watched the election — I was called by the biggest people, saying congratulations sir, you just won the election. It was 10 o’clock, and you looked at the numbers… this election result was over. And then they did dumps, they call ’em dumps. Big, massive dumps, in Michigan, in Pennsylvania, and all over.’

He sounds like he’s trying to sound “in the know” with his comment that “they call ’em dumps.” They who? His lackeys in the White House? He just sounds staggeringly ignorant.

Trump angrily added as follows:

‘This is total fraud, and how the FBI and Department of Justice — I don’t know, maybe they’re involved, but how people are allowed to get away with this stuff is unbelievable. This election was rigged. This election was a total fraud, and it continues to be as they hide. And the problem we have, we go to judges, and people don’t wanna get involved.’

The Department of Justice and FBI aren’t the only institutions that Trump dissed. He also went after election administration in Georgia, where Biden eked out a narrow victory. Trump has characterized the state’s Republican leaders as complicit in some kind of fraud scheme, which is just utterly false. Nevertheless, Trump’s supporters seem to be taking his messages to heart — and this Sunday, those messages included a complaint about the systems in place for the upcoming Senate run-off elections in Georgia. What if Trump faithfuls aren’t motivated to vote because they believe that elections are “rigged”? The GOP’s strategy of convincing their voters that secretive operatives control the strings of elections could be backfiring!

At another point in the same Fox interview, Trump claimed that fraudsters “used COVID as a means to stuff the ballot boxes,” which there’s simply no meaningful evidence for whatsoever. The closest approximation of “evidence” was… a hunch from Trump, basically.

Trump angrily ranted as follows:

‘Joe Biden did not get 16 million more votes than Barack Hussein Obama. He didn’t get it. Joe Biden did not get 14 million more votes than Hillary Clinton. And by the way — he didn’t beat Obama in the Black communities. You go to some of these communities where Obama is very, very popular — and he beats him in some of these communities… now think of that: he beat Obama in swing states. You know that didn’t happen. They stuffed the ballot boxes. Everybody knows that.’
