The United States is currently on a fast and deadly upswing of the COVID-19 virus, with more than 3,000 Americans dying every day. Hospitals are overwhelmed, medical workers are in shorter and shorter supply, and the economy is headed for a serious crash due to the damage already done by COVID. The president of the United States, meanwhile, is busy arguing about the effectiveness of masks, the unfairness of the media, and an election he lost by the largest margin of any incumbent president in history, which he still says he won.
How much worse off would California be if it had ordered *none* of the covid lockdowns and just told people to be cautious for the last 9 months?

Trump has done far more to hurt the country during COVID-19 with his spread of misinformation about the virus, including about the effectiveness of masks and mask mandates. The science is already settled on this question. Medical scientists, who know far more about epidemiology than a failed businessman and reality TV game show host, say that:
‘Weekly increases in per-capita mortality were four times lower in places where masks were the norm or recommended by the government, compared with other regions. Researchers looked at 200 countries, including Mongolia, which adopted mask use in January and, as of May, had recorded no deaths related to COVID-19…mandates might have averted as many as 450,000 cases, after controlling for other mitigation measures, such as physical distancing.’
As long as Trump can keep feeding his supporters lies – whether those lies are about COVID-19, masks, the presidential election, or the success of his presidency – and keep the money pouring in, he’s not going to stop. The damage he’s already done is severe, and he still has 34 more days in office to keep the country divided and sick.
