Mike Pence Defies Donald Trump & His Cult Of Deplorables

We have Georgia to thank for ejecting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) from his twisted power grab as he sat at the door of the Senate. He called himself the Grim Reaper who caught every House bill as it tried to slip through into the Senate. What an appropriate name. Today is a bad day for him. It is worse for another key Republican.

Congressional reporter for POLITICO Kyle Cheney obtained a copy of the letter that Vice President Mike Pence handed out to the joint session as he strode to the from of the room to preside over the lawmakers.

Pence is in a terrible place. After four years of perfectly managing a relationship with the difficult Donald Trump, he has to choose between Trump and the Constitution, against his wrathful boss or for America. He chose well.

Cheney tweeted out a copy of that letter:

‘BREAKING: Pence will not try to block Biden’s electors’

In Pence’s letter, he spoke about the oath he took to defend the Constitution:

‘Four years ago, surrounded by my family, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution which ended with the words, “So help me God.” Today I want to assure the American people that I will keep the oath I made to them and I will keep the oath I made to Almighty God.’

The vice president continued, noting he would “count the votes of the electoral college…in a manner consistent with our Constitution, laws, and history:”

‘When the Joint Session of Congress convenes today, I will do my duty to see to it that we open the certificates of the Electors of the several states, we hear objections raise by Senators and Representatives, and we count the votes of the Electoral College for President and Vice President in a manner consistent with our Constitution, laws, and history. So Help Me God.’

Mike Pence said as he began the session:

‘It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not.’
