During a weekend appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Republican Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania called for outgoing President Donald Trump to resign, thereby cutting off the opportunity for him to do any more damage. He’s actually the second Republican Senator to make the same call after Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski did the same. Both Senators were reacting to Trump’s role in inciting a violent mob that stormed the Capitol last Wednesday, forcing top legislative leaders to flee for their safety and possibly lives. Outside the Capitol building, rioters put up a functional gallows, and one news photographer who was on the scene said that he heard individuals talking about wanting to hang Vice President Mike Pence, who was inside the building when the rioters broke in.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has already stated that the House will move forward with impeachment in the absence of a resignation from Trump. Meanwhile, Toomey commented as follows:

‘I think at this point, with just a few days left, [resignation is] the best path forward — the best way to get this person in the rearview mirror for us. That could happen immediately. I’m not optimistic it will, but I do think that would be the best way forward.’

Subsequently, defending his decision to vote for Trump a second time, Toomey said that, after the election, Trump “descended into a level of madness… that was just absolutely unthinkable and unforgivable.” Since the election, Trump has waged a feverish court fight against the election outcome, claiming that the race was rigged against him, despite the total lack of meaningfully conclusive evidence for this idea. After dozens of court losses, Trump still refused to acknowledge the basic reality of what was going on around him, insisting to a crowd of his supporters on the morning of the Capitol riot that he would never concede — although in a post-riot video, he publicly acknowledged (for what seemed like the first time) that he would no longer be president within weeks.

On CNN, Toomey commented as follows:

‘I don’t think there’s any doubt at all — there’s none in my mind — that the president’s behavior after the election was wildly different than his behavior before. He descended into a level of madness and engaged in activity that was just absolutely unthinkable and unforgivable. For four years, he often put out offensive and objectionable tweets — actually sometimes dozens a day — I never felt and I still don’t think that my job was to be the editor of his Twitter feed, although I was very often critical.’
