Something awful has happened to the Grand Old Party (GOP). It has become like the nation’s appendix — there but for no special reason. Although, it could and did go very bad. The GOP has loosened from its moors, its roots decayed, and lifted. By the time the Republicans realized it, their party had been filled with and overcome by gangrenous Trumpism. It had been pulled away by Donald Trump’s toxic current of sludge.
Dedicated Republicans who have spent their entire lives in the party finally woke up and discovered that the party that they served was no longer theirs.
Oklahoma Congressman Mickey Edwards was one of those Republicans. He said that he no long affiliates himself with the GOP, according to KFOR-TV out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma:
‘It’s gone. I mean there is no Republican Party anymore that has values, principles, morals, anything.’
Edwards’ heroes were the Republican leaders, and he registered as soon as he was legally able, according to The Liberty Herald:
‘We thought taxes could be too high and harmful, we thought regulation could be too much and harmful, we should have a strong military – I agreed with all of that. It’s true today. I still agree with that.’
He was in the House of Republicans for 16 years, from 1977 to 1993, and became one of those leaders. Yet, he watched in horror to see that Donald Trump came in and mesmerized many of its members, turning his party into a semi-religious cult. Trump played the part of Jesus.
When members of his own party were angered by President-elect Joe Biden’s win and contested it, that was it for him. Edwards and 30 other Congressional Republicans have written a letter.
The retired representative could not comprehend how Trump acolytes could fight against that fair election. The intelligence community, pro-Trump governors, legislators, and other elected officials called it a fair election.
Edwards said that these elected officials in the House knew Trump lost the election. He claimed that the member of Congress knew better. Members were fully aware that Trump lost:
‘The members of Congress knew better. They knew better. Lankford knew better. They knew the results, they had the information. They saw that it was Republican Trump supporters all across the country who were saying, “no, we lost:”‘
‘Supporters of President Donald Trump are confronted by U.S. Capitol Police officers outside the Senate Chamber inside the Capitol in Washington. An Arizona man seen in photos and video of the mob wearing a fur hat with horns was also charged Saturday in Wednesday’s chaos. Jacob Anthony Chansley, who also goes by the name Jake Angeli, was taken into custody Saturday, Jan. 9.’
Government workers asked that Trump and elected officials just tell the truth: He lost.
Representative James Langford (R-OK) indicated that Oklahoma’s Congressional Delegation did not like the Electoral College, The Oklahoman reported. Ironically, this was something they had in common with many Americans of many parties.
‘This has become a cult. It’s no longer a political party. It’s a cult. It’s the kind of a cult that when the leader of the cult does anything, no matter what it is, or how awful it is, they voted. “They voted to question the election results even after people came into the Capitol, tried to kill them and killed a police officer who was trying to protect them. And they did that.’
The Oklahoma Republican went against Trump’s party:
‘U.S. Sen. James Lankford didn’t acknowledge Democrat Joe Biden as the president-elect. He didn’t say President Donald Trump should concede the election. But to some Oklahomans, Lankford abandoned the GOP president when he vowed to ensure Biden receives classified intelligence briefings while states are still counting ballots.’
