Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who helped lead ex-President Donald Trump’s fight against the election outcome, is continuing to face serious scrutiny over his part in pushing the delusional lies that helped incite the violent rioting at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, which is connected to at least five deaths. On Thursday, a group known as Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD) asked the grievance committee governing lawyers in New York to suspend Giuliani from practicing law and investigate his work on behalf of the now former president.

LDAD said that Giuliani crossed “ethical boundaries,” adding as follows:

‘Mr. Giuliani personally advanced and argued claims in court that were frivolous and had no reasonable purpose other than to fuel the extrajudicial campaign of falsehoods.’

There was never, at any point, any legitimate supporting evidence for the idea that the recent presidential election was rigged for Biden, as Trump and his allies like Giuliani repeatedly claimed. Some of the conspiracy theories that Trump allies pushed included the idea that Dominion Voting Systems, a widely used election management and voting machines company, was culpable in the imaginary nationwide election-rigging. Sidney Powell, another lawyer who was involved with the Trump-allied fight against the election outcome, even alleged that Dominion’s supposed scheming was at least originally the work of Hugo Chavez… a Venezuelan dictator who died in 2013.

No court ever accepted the claim from the Trump team that there was systematic election fraud. These nonsensical lies provided the cover for the recent Capitol rioting, where some of Trump’s supporters tried to forcibly disrupt the Congressional proceedings to certify the electoral college outcome, meaning Biden’s victory. In an outdoor speech in D.C. shortly before the rioting, Giuliani encouraged “trial by combat”… and then the deadly rioting unfolded nearby.

New York University law professor Stephen Gillers commented to LDAD as follows:

‘In his extensive court filings and public statements baselessly challenging the legitimacy of the election, and by urging ‘trial by combat’ to impede the operation of the Constitution and laws of the United States, Rudolph Giuliani has behaved disgracefully.’

Giuliani isn’t the only one facing steep consequences after the spread of the Trump team’s election lies culminated in the recent Capitol rioting. In the final days of his time in office, the Democrat-led House impeached Trump for a second time, and a Senate trial for the now former president is on the horizon.
