Multiple Republican Congressmen Receive Federal Complaint Over Insurrection

Following 2020’s presidential election, an election that Donald Trump legitimately lost, at least three Republican representatives decided to make a political name for themselves by backing Trump’s ridiculous claims that he won in a “landslide” but that the vote had been taken away from him by evil Democrats, Republicans, vote tabulating machines, the media, election officials, the Supreme Court, and a whole host of other dastardly thieves. Now, those three representatives are feeling the fallout of the riot they inspired at the Capitol Building.

The ethics watchdog group Campaign for Accountability wrote to Omar Ashmawy, Staff Director and Chief Counsel of the Office of Congressional Ethics, to request an investigation into the actions of those representatives prior to the act of insurrection in which Trump supporters illegally broke into the Capitol Building, stole sensitive materials, desecrated the building, erected a gallows pole where they intended to hang Vice President Mike Pence, and sent elected officials running for their lives.

In the letter, it says:

‘Campaign for Accountability (“CfA”) respectfully requests that the Office of Congressional Ethics (“OCE”) investigate whether Representatives Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) violated federal law by inciting a riot as part of a seditious conspiracy to use force to prevent Congress from carrying out its constitutional and statutory duties to count the votes of the Electoral College. CfA also requests that OCE investigate whether Representative Cawthorn violated both federal law and District of Columbia law by carrying a firearm throughout the Capitol Building, particularly the floor of the House of Representatives.’

Ali Alexander, a far right activist who organized the campaign, says he was in direct contact with Brooks, Biggs, and Gosar in putting the event together. This was not a random claim; multiple examples of the representatives tagging him on Twitter, promoting him and his event.

 

‘In the weeks following the 2020 presidential election and leading up to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Representative Gosar made no secret of his friendly relationship with Alexander. Days after the November 6, 2020 elections, Representative Gosar called Alexander a “patriot” in response to a since-deleted tweet by Alexander ahead of #StopTheSteal rallies across the country.’

Alexander says that the three representatives gave him the idea for the call to assemble on January 6, where then-President Trump and a host of lawmakers and right-wing officials urged an angry mob to march not he Capitol Building where lawmakers were doing the work of certifying the 2020 elections. Alexander said in an interview that he had inside help.

‘I’m the guy who came up with the idea of January 6 when I was talking with Congressman Gosar, Congressman Andy Biggs, and Congressman Mo Brooks. So were the four guys who came up with a January 6 event — #DoNotCertify — and it was to build momentum and pressure, and then on the day change hearts and minds of congresspeoples [sic] who weren’t yet decided, or saw everyone outside and said, ‘I can’t be on the other side of that mob.’
