Prompt Resignation Of Four Republicans Called For By State Leaders

Arizona Democrats are advocating for the immediate resignation of their state’s four current Republican members of Congress after every one of them backed the recent GOP objections to the Congressional certification of some of Joe Biden’s electoral votes. Arizona’s four current Republican Representatives include Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, David Schweikert, and Debbie Lesko, and each one of these individuals voted against the certification of some of Biden’s electoral votes. Schweikert, unlike his Arizona Republican colleagues, voted to certify Biden’s electoral votes from Arizona — but he voted against the acceptance of Biden’s electoral votes from Pennsylvania. There was never any legitimate evidence in any case that warranted the disqualification of certain electoral votes.

The push for the immediate resignation of Arizona’s four Republican Representatives was in the form of a resolution that the Arizona Democratic Party was set to formally consider over the weekend after the measure previously passed the party’s resolution committee earlier in January. As The Arizona Republic reports, the individuals behind the resolution are “calling for the immediate resignation of all four of the state’s House Republicans for challenging the presidential election results and spreading “conspiracy theorist lies” that helped create the environment that ended in the Jan. 6 rampage at the U.S. Capitol.” On January 6, when Congress gathered to formally certify the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election, a mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the building under the deluded assumption that the documented election outcome was dubious — an idea that Arizona Republicans pushed.

Although he had plenty of supporters, ex-President Donald Trump was no doubt the chief proponent of the outlandish lie that the documented 2020 election outcome was dubious, and House Democrats impeached Trump for a second time over his role in inciting the riot shortly before the end of his term. Alongside the call for the resignation of Arizona’s four Republican Representatives, Arizona Democratic activists have also been advocating for Arizona’s two Democratic U.S. Senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, to vote in favor of convicting Trump during his upcoming Senate trial. Sinema was in the Senate and voted to convict Trump at the end of his last impeachment trial, but Kelly was first elected last November.

When she recently faced a question about the House’s impeachment proceedings against Trump, Sinema said that she was “not going to spend time on the what-ifs.” Formally convicting the former president would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate, which could possibly fall into place considering the recently reported animosity of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) towards Trump.
