Over half of the Republicans in Utah believe the big lie. They think that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election. Even though the ex-president lost the election by seven million votes, his big lie is alive and lingers on. Nearly two-thirds of Utah Republicans believe the nasty smear that Trump began spreading even as his reelection campaign started grinding up its gears. They believe his lie that the election was stolen via voter fraud. Here is what Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) had to say about that.
A Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll released last week found that 65% of Utah Republicans believe there was widespread voter fraud, and 56% believe Trump legitimately won the election, according to The Desert News:
‘You’ve got to have that get into the rear-view mirror before you talk about the next stage.’
A full 52 percent of Utah Republicans have an unfavorable view of President Joe Biden, according to the poll. According to The Huffington Post, the trial is important for unity, according to The Huffington Post.
GOP officials have not been helping the matter either the Desert News continued:
‘You have many of the Trump supporters in elected office, senators, congresspeople, governors, continuing to say the same thing, that the election was stolen. [Trump campaign] had a chance to take their message to the courts, the courts laughed them out of court. I’ve seen no evidence that suggests that there was widespread voter fraud.’
Romney told Republicans to go proclaim the truth on Fox News and say:
‘“You know what, I was a big Trump supporter, I was really pulling for Donald Trump, but he lost fair and square.”’
The other Utah Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) released a statement that read:
‘If the Senate were to adopt a broad interpretation of the impeachment power — one allowing federal officials to be convicted on impeachment charges even after leaving office— the result would not only be problematic, but also contrary to the text, structure and historical understanding of the Constitution.’
Romney said Tuesday the Senate must hold the impeachment trial. They must hold Trump accountable:
‘Five people died with the attack on the Capitol. Five human beings died. There’s no question but that the president incited the insurrection that occurred. How culpable is he? That’s something we will evaluate.’
Romney was the only Republican member of the Senate to vote to convict 45 in his first impeachment trial:
‘I believe that it’s an element of unity, which I look forward to having resolved so that we can move on.’
Some Republicans claim that a trial would further divide the country. Romney disagreed:
‘I say, first of all, have you gone out publicly and said that there was not widespread voter fraud and that Joe Biden is the legitimate president of the United States? If you said that, then I’m happy to listen to you talk about other things that might inflame anger and divisiveness. But if you haven’t said that, that’s really what’s at the source of the anger right now.’
