They are a bunch of chicken-hearted, greedy cowards. These words describe the current Republican Party. If they had not been more fearful of losing their jobs than serving Americans with honor and dignity, Donald Trump and the rest of his conspiracy freaks would have never taken over. Yes, the GOP has lost itself to QAnoners and other like groups.
All the former Senate Majority Leader Mitch Grim Reaper McConnell wanted was 1. for his party to remain in power, with him leading, of course, and 2. a hoard of his conservative, if ill-equipped judges in place.
The problem was that the no-longer Grand Old Party (GOP) diluted itself in order to morph into something that would be palatable to the wacko bunch. After McConnell and his ilk created the monster Donald Trump, stood him up, and let him go, they found they could not control him.
Senator Ben Sasse (R-NB) was an outlier who indicated that he just might vote to convict Trump during the impeachment trial. The Nebraska Republican State Central Committee was not particularly happy about what Sasse indicated. In fact, the state party wanted to censure him for criticizing 45.
He accurately said that his party had to choose between “conservatism and madness,” according to YouTube. He warned them:
‘[Trumpism was] not only civic cancer for the nation [but] just terrible for our party.’
Sasse was not a Trump supporter in 2016 or 2020. He called his state Republicans “angry about life,” and held true to his own beliefs:
‘I listen to Nebraskans every day and very few of them are as angry about life as some of the people on this committee. Not all of you, but a lot. Political addicts don’t represent most Nebraska conservatives.’
Sasse is not alone when he says this. Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) has been the third-ranking House Republican. Yet on Thursday, Trumpsters tried to have her evicted from her position, because she voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment. She commented:
‘Now, many of you are hacked off that I condemned his lies that led to a riot. Let’s be clear: the anger in the state party has never been about me violating principle or abandoning conservative policy. I’m one of the most conservative voters in the senate. The anger has always simply been about me not bending the knee to one guy.’
‘It happened because the president lied to you. He lied about the election results for 60 days, despite losing 60 straight court challenges, many of them handed down by wonderful Trump-appointed judges.’
‘The crowd chanted “Hange Pence,” Sasse recalled:
‘He then riled a mob that attacked the capitol, many chanting, “Hang Pence.” If that president were a Democrat, we both know how you’d respond. But because he had ‘Republican’ behind his name, you’re defending him.’
‘Something has definitely changed over the last four years, but it’s not me. Personality cults aren’t conservative. Conspiracy theories aren’t conservative. Lying that an election has been stolen, it’s not conservative. Acting like politics is a religion, it isn’t conservative.’
He pointed out that Nebraska voted in Sasse handily in 2020:
‘Nebraskans aren’t rage addicts and that’s good news. You are welcome to censure me again, but let’s be clear about why this is happening — it’s because I still believe as you used to that politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude.’
Even though he carried all 93 Nebraska counties, the state Republican Party censured him in May 2016 for not supporting 45 enough.
Sasse said:
‘We’re going to have to choose between conservatism and madness, between just trolling and actually persuading the rising generation of Americans again. That’s what I’m focused on and I sincerely hope many of you will join in celebrating these big worthwhile causes for freedom. I’m always going to work hard for Nebraskans and I’m always going to tell you the truth.’
