There is a mile-wide swath of litter consisting of failed small businesses and money-strapped cities behind Donald Trump any time he turns around. He is notorious for not paying his bills. He does not pay his attorneys, his small subcontractors, and the cities who have to house his rallies. Now, two Georgia counties are calling in their dues.
Together, they are suing for almost $20,000 in attorney fees they incurred as a result of Trump’s attempts to steal Georgia away from its rightful winner, President Joe Biden. They are suing the head of the Georgia GOP, too, claiming their lawsuit was frivolous.
Cobb County requested $10,875 and DeKalb County asked for $6,105 for compensation, CNN reported. That is nothing to the president, but substantial in the two states’ budgets. In December, Trump and Georgia Republican Party Chairman David Shafer filed the lawsuit in Fulton County Superior Court. Defendants in the new lawsuits are Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and 15 county election supervisors, and the state election board.
Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration head Daniel White and Director of the Cobb County Elections Department Janine Eveler filed the lawsuit. They included this statement:
‘Petitioners apparently believed that they could file their baseless and legally deficient actions with impunity, with no regard for the costs extracted from the taxpayers’ coffers or the consequences to the democratic foundations of our country.’
The DeKalb lawsuit accused Trump and Shafer of:
‘[C]ontinued to pursue this litigation after the election contest became moot, all without legal justification.’
According to CNN, White said that only the two counties, DeKalb and Cobb counties, have sought attorneys’ and court fees compensation, but that could change as other counties are are watching what the first two counties are doing.
The ex-president blamed Georgia for stealing the election from what was rightfully his. Biden snatched the true victory from him by a mere 11,779 votes, the first Democrat to win the Peach State since the 1990s. Raffensperger tried to accommodate Trump with multiple recounts. Then he certified Joe Biden as the winner last December.
Georgia had to recount the state’s approximate five million presidential ballots three times. Since Biden won by fewer than 0.5 percent, the recount if requested was mandatory. Raffensperger recertified the election results in December, again declaring Biden the winner by 11,779 more votes in the state than Trump.
During a December news conference, Raffensperger announced:
‘We have now counted legally cast ballots three times, and the results remain unchanged.’
Trump claimed that if he lost, the election was rigged. Regardless of how inane that heads-I-win-tails-you-lose scenario sounds, people fell for it under his wicked spell. He tried to manipulate Secretary of State Raffensperger into finding him his “11,780 votes,” one more than Biden won. Then, he put the pressure on, but the secretary of state held firm and helped save our democracy.
The then-president said during an Atlanta campaign rally:
‘We have now counted legally cast ballots three times, and the results remain unchanged.’
