Florida lawyer Daniel Uhlfelder is planning to have a protest banner flown in the vicinity of this week and weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event that reads: “Welcome Insurrectionists,” calling back to the storming of the U.S. Capitol that unfolded last month at the incitement of then-President Donald Trump. The rioters hoped to forcibly stop the Congressional certification of Joe Biden’s election victory, and they operated under the explicit pretense of Trump’s delusional and dangerous lie that the election was originally rigged for Biden.

On Thursday evening, the “Remove Ron” Twitter account — which refers to Florida Governor and ardent Trump ally Ron DeSantis — said that the team was just $1,500 away from having enough funds to fly the banner at CPAC. Originally, Uhlfelder gained notoriety for putting on a “Grim Reaper” costume and showing up in public in Florida in protest of the DeSantis administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has, at this point, claimed the lives of over 30,000 Floridians. Like Trump, DeSantis has opted for a comparatively relaxed approach to the pandemic.

Trump himself is slated to speak at CPAC over the weekend. The conference is, by all appearances, giving a platform for the same dangerous conspiracy theories that recently fueled the rioting at the Capitol, which is connected to multiple deaths. Just recently, Trump has reiterated his false belief that he was the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election, despite the fact that no court anywhere in the country ever even partially accepted this idea in any case. At this point, the entire presidential transition process has long since played out — believing that Trump was the rightful winner would likely require a belief in a staggering level of secret corruption across virtually all meaningful levels of government, from the city and county levels to D.C.

It seems safe to assume that Trump will bring up his election conspiracy theories while at CPAC. The conference quickly devolved into clownery as it got underway — the theme, for starters, was “America Uncanceled,” which references the conservative paranoia about “cancel culture,” which is their preferred boogeyman term for a push for basic accountability in response to documented destructive behavior. Republican politicians like Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) and Jim Jordan (Ohio) have pushed the idea that cancel culture is one of the most serious issues facing the United States today — sure, people are dying by the thousands from COVID-19, but somewhere, somebody was mean to a Republican, and that’s apparently more important to these fools!
