Donald Trump Jr.’s Thursday remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, got off to a wild start. He complained about an airstrike that the Biden administration recently carried out against an Iranian-aligned target in Syria in retaliation for Iranian aggression — as though Don Jr.’s own father didn’t strike Syrian targets twice! There was no hint of self-awareness in his self-righteous complaints about the Biden administration’s strike on a target in Syria — none. There was no hint of awareness of the fact that Donald Jr.’s dad repeatedly led strikes against Syrian targets.
Subsequently, Trump Jr. went on a tirade against Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who has been vocally critical of his father, and he complained about what he called potentially “incompetent women” while discussing the fact that the Biden administration nominated a woman, Isabel Guzman, to lead the Small Business Administration — although to be fair, Trump Jr. subsequently complained about so-called “incompetent men” as well. Trump Jr. meant to mock the Biden administration’s consideration of diversity in their hiring and appointments — although it’s worth noting that the Trump administration itself featured a woman at the helm of the Small Business Administration, making Trump Jr.’s comments even weirder.
Trump Jr. added as follows as his rambling remarks went on:
‘This month alone: they’ve banned the Muppets. If there’s things that you thought were sort of above cancellation, you would be wrong. There is nothing the Radical Left won’t cancel. Hasbro now wants a gender-neutral Mr. Potato Head. These are the issues of our times, folks. If Hasbro really wanted a gender-neutral Mr. Potato Head so badly, they should just slap a picture of CNN’s Brian Stelter on their next potato!.. We might as well get something out of the branding!’
Trump Jr. sounded like a wannabe stand-up comic at a mostly empty bar at 2 a.m. He did not show self-awareness of the fact that he was making the Hasbro rebranding into an “issue” with his obsession over the topic — it’s not like the Biden administration rolled out a toy rebranding plan!
Trump Jr. then got into a straight-up deceptive point of his sprawling presentation. He claimed that low wage earners “for the first time in modern history under Donald Trump” began to see “real wage growth,” but just last month, when Trump was still in office, The New York Times reported that wage growth for low income Americans “began gradually accelerating in 2014 as unemployment continued to fall” — and news flash, Don Jr.: Donald Trump was not president in 2014!
It got worse — during a rant about President Joe Biden, when referencing the fact that 80 million people voted for him, Trump Jr. used air quotes around the phrase 80 million, clearly hoping to delusionally imply that fraud was responsible for Biden’s victory. This idea led to the deadly storming of the Capitol last month, and no court anywhere in the country ever accepted the idea, but the total lack of meaningfully legitimate evidence definitely did not stop Trump Jr.
He’s just not connected to reality — he subsequently self-righteously claimed that Republicans don’t bring up the possibility of trying to get outlets like CNN off the air because they’re so committed to free speech or whatever, but Donald Jr.’s own father once publicly suggested, while in office as president, getting certain media off the air!
