During an appearance on the Fox News program Sunday Morning Futures over the weekend, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) insisted that Vice President Kamala Harris is somehow connected to a supposed Democratic Party plot to sink the political careers of Democratic Governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Gavin Newsom of California.
Cuomo has recently faced criticism over his administration’s manipulation of COVID-19 death data and allegations of sexual harassment, while Newsom is facing broader complaints from Republicans over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state. As Nunes sees it, Democrats are purposefully undermining Cuomo and Newsom in order to clear the way for a 2024 presidential run from Harris… but there’s no meaningful evidence for any of this nonsense. It’s a fairy tale.
The gap between Nunes’s self-confidence and his actual grasp of facts is striking. He commented as follows:
‘The Democratic Party is really a socialist party with a politburo system. It’s how it runs out in California… Kamala Harris never really had to run for anything, and when she did run for something, she couldn’t even get one percent in the Democratic primary. She had to drop out after blowing through $100 million. So, what I believe they’re doing here is that Cuomo and Newsom are expendable now. They’re a threat to the politburo system. They’re a threat to Harris… This is all about eliminating the opposition.. so that she has a free run in 2024.’
Asked earlier in the segment whether he thinks that Newsom will actually be recalled in an upcoming election when Californians will vote on whether or not they want to recall — meaning remove — the governor from office, Nunes belittled “the people of California,” which doesn’t exactly seem like a great electoral strategy! As he characterized it, Californians are living in ignorance. He complained:
‘If they found out that the Speaker of the House was getting their hair done when other people couldn’t get their hair done during COVID, if they find out that the governor was having certain places that were open while others were closed, some people were eating outside while he was eating inside at one of the nicest restaurants and finest restaurants in California without wearing a mask, without social distancing… I think those types of issues, if the independent voter — those people that don’t pay attention to politics — learn about the corruption of the Democratic Party and the socialist party in California, I think a Republican… [will] have a very good chance of winning.’
The fact that Nunes thinks that Newsom’s patronage of a restaurant is going to turn millions of people against him is wild. In 2018, when Newsom was first elected, he beat his Republican challenger by almost 3 million votes. Besides — when did failing to adhere to COVID-19 safety precautions become something about which a Republican like Nunes would complain? Did the Trump White House ever meaningfully adhere to COVID-19 safety precautions for any meaningful period of time?
