Electoral Challenge Against Marjorie Greene Already Announced In Georgia

Georgia Democrat and veteran Marcus Flowers has announced that he is running for Congress in hopes to unseat Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), an incendiary first-term Congresswoman who has closely allied herself to ex-President Donald Trump. Besides her brash Trump support, Greene has also attracted criticism and condemnation for past rhetoric including apparent support for executing prominent Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), although Greene has sought to broadly distance herself from her past remarks.

In an announcement video released on Monday, Flowers discussed the Capitol rioting and said, in part, as follows:

‘I’m Marcus Flowers, and I’ve spent my life serving this country in combat zones across the world, but I never thought I’d see one here in the United States. That’s Marjorie Taylor Greene’s America. Her twisted conspiracy theories may have made her famous, but they haven’t done a damn thing to help the people here in our district. Now I’m running for Congress because Georgians deserve better — better healthcare, COVID relief, and real representation.’

No matter any attempted retractions or walkbacks on Greene’s part, the issues associated with her presence in Congress remain. Although she has since distanced herself from the movement, Greene even once expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory, which is an extremist political philosophy that insists that top Democrats are secretly cannibals and Satan-worshipers. The fact that any member of Congress ever thought that QAnon was even worth considering is a travesty and a testament to destructive political delusion within the GOP.

Flowers is not the first Democrat to announce a Congressional run in hopes of unseating Greene. Recently, local resident Holly McCormack did the same with an announcement that, like Flowers’s video, touted her localized concerns.

While in power, Greene has focused on stunts, from an effort to impeach President Joe Biden — which has attracted zero co-sponsors — to the more recent placement of an anti-trans sign outside of her Capitol Hill office. Greene characterized anti-discrimination legislation that the House recently passed to broadly protect LGBTQ Americans as an attack against God, which is just laughably ridiculous. After her support for executing Democrats resurfaced, the House voted to remove Greene from her Congressional committee assignments, but the House Republican conference has taken no substantive action against her.
