Why are Republicans so pathologically obsessed with women’s sports? Amid efforts to secure anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, Republicans have feverishly pushed the idea that protecting transgender people from discrimination in particular will somehow spell the de facto end of women’s sports because of the opportunity for transgender women to compete. During an appearance over the weekend on the Fox program Sunday Morning Futures with host Maria Bartiromo, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) reiterated this idea, besides also complaining that the Biden administration’s immigration policies will supposedly mean that a million undocumented people will soon be coming into the country.
In other words, the racist anti-immigrant outrage machine at Fox continues to run at a feverish pace. As Graham angrily put it:
‘These people in the Congress today, the House and the Senate on the Democratic side, are out of control liberals, and God help us all if we don’t check and balance them in 2022.’
Graham also complained about the recently passed COVID-19 relief package and H.R. 1, otherwise known as the For the People Act, which he falsely claimed would essentially mean the end of meaningful security procedures around voting.
He angrily ranted as follows:
‘Look back and see what’s happened in the Democratic-controlled House in the last 30 days. You’ve passed a COVID relief package, $1.9 trillion, very partisan, 90 percent of the money’s got nothing to do with COVID. You’ve got H.R. 1, which is open borders for voting. The federal government is gonna take over the voting systems in this country. There’ll be no checks and balance, no verification of who you are, mail-in voting run rampant.’
Subsequently, besides also complaining about a program in the relief package that provides benefits to farmers from marginalized communities, he got to his bizarre anti-LGBTQ ranting. As he put it:
‘And finally the Equality Act… they passed a bill that does away with the distinction between being a man and woman in the law. Biological boys are gonna start playing in girls’ sports, and if you’re a religious organization out there, and your faith dictates that certain things happen, this bill takes that ability to say no away from you. It’s a reshaping of America. This is a trilogy of radical policy, and I hope the American people are paying attention, because if you’re not, you’re gonna wake up in a few years and your country will not be the nation you remember it being.’
The existential fearmongering in Graham’s remarks is alarming. This kind of constant fight-or-flight mode of thinking that Graham and his allies push leads to real-world consequences like the Capitol rioting. Graham is working to convince his listeners that they’re in some kind of existential battle with Democrats, and it’s dangerous.
