Boebert Claims GOP Will Retake House After Democrat Resignations

At an in-person town hall event in Colorado earlier this week, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said that she believes that mass Democratic resignations from Congress are on the horizon that could allow Republicans to assume control of both houses of Congress before the midterm elections. Her comments are not based in reality — she cited “information” that she said ex-President Donald Trump “declassified” before leaving office, but there was simply no declassification of any sort of information that is somehow poised to drive Democrats from Congress.

Nevertheless, as Boebert delusionally put it, discussing allegations of impending departures:

‘I have very good sources that tell me this is very good information. Is it 100%? I don’t know but it’s very good information. We all know that there was information that was declassified just a few days before President Trump left office. I know someone who is involved in declassifying that. This person is getting very tired of waiting on the [Department of Justice] to do something about it. We’ll be hearing about it very, very soon. This is my opinion with that information that I have. I believe we’ll see resignations begin to take place and I think we can take back the majority in the House and the Senate before 2022.’

There is no real-world indication that Boebert knows what she is talking about in any respect. Boebert’s reference to supposedly impending mass resignations mirrors claims from the QAnon conspiracy theory, a vestige of right-wing extremism that runs on the idea that Trump has been secretly fighting a covert group of cannibals and Satan-worshipers, including high-ranking figures in the Democratic Party and mainstream media. QAnon believers have repeatedly spoken of supposedly impending mass arrests that have never actually materialized in any way.

During her town hall event, Boebert also addressed so-called cancel culture, which conservatives have been absolutely freaking out over recently. The term refers to the general idea of holding people accountable for their actions, which conservatives have been taking as some kind of unconscionable affront against freedom… or something.

Referring to a story from the Bible of the first murder, Boebert claimed that “Cain cancelled Abel,” which is an… odd way to describe murder, to put it lightly. Boebert also claimed that Democrats “tried to cancel Jesus,” but “you can’t cancel God,” which is just bizarre. She’s living in this self-righteous fantasyland while Democrats do actual work to help the American people through means like the American Rescue Plan relief package.
