Lindsey Graham Thoroughly Embarrasses Himself On ‘Fox Sunday’

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday over the weekend, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) defended assault weapon ownership by presenting a strange hypothetical scenario in which he himself would have no choice but to shoot at gangs who threaten his home in the aftermath of an unspecified natural disaster. There are some questions here — why would police be unable to protect the area while “gangs” would be able to roam freely? Why would Graham be in his house at all, if circumstances were that bad? What level of destruction would the natural disaster have to reach for authorities to leave a United States Senator at the mercy of (unspecified) gangs? His comments are ridiculous.

Recently, two mass shootings have rocked the country, including incidents in Atlanta, Georgia and Boulder, Colorado, but Graham seemed unmoved. As he put it:

‘There’s nothing wrong about debate. As a matter of fact, I would challenge Senator Schumer to bring the assault weapons ban to the floor of the United States Senate. It won’t get 50 votes, much less 60. I own an AR-15. If there’s a natural disaster in South Carolina where the cops can’t protect my neighborhood, my house will be the last one that the gang will come to, because I can defend myself. You don’t have to have an AR-15, but if you have one lawfully, I think you should be allowed to keep it.’

Again — in what universe would Graham’s imagined scenario even have a legitimate chance of actually playing out? How would the imaginary gangs even know that he has an AR-15? Does he expect them to have been watching this episode of Fox News Sunday? Does he have a sign outside of his house announcing his gun ownership? What if somebody steals it? The point is — he’s ridiculous. It would probably be difficult for Graham to point to a single instance of his imagined scenario actually playing out in the real world in the U.S.

The Senator added:

‘Most of these problems have a lot to do with mental health. Count me in for addressing that issue… but at the end of the day, if you think an assault weapons ban is what the country needs, bring it to the floor of the United States Senate, and vote on it.’

Check out his comments below:

Schumer has pledged to take action on gun violence. As he put it recently:

‘This Senate will act to address the epidemic of gun violence in this country. I will put a bill to help stop gun violence on the floor of the Senate.’

At present, the filibuster rule in the Senate — which demands the agreement of 60 Senators before moving to a final vote on most legislation — could make reform in this policy area difficult.
