Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is in a very precarious position. If he is convicted of the allegations from the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said House Republicans would support removing Gaetz from his committee assignments.

In an interview with Fox News’ Dana Perino, McCarthy said, according to The Forbes magazine:

‘I haven’t heard from DOJ, I haven’t been able to talk to Matt Gaetz yet. I just read the story. Those are serious implications. If it comes out to be true, yes, we would remove him.’

However, he added:

‘Right now, he says it is not true, and we don’t have any information. Let’s get all the information.’

Gaetz’s congressional page lists his committees as:

‘Armed Services Committee

  • Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces
  • Subcommittee on Military Personnel

Judiciary Committee

  • Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law
  • Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and The Internet’

The Fox News host asked the House minority leader about Gaetz as the only no vote on the 2017 legislation related to human trafficking. McCarthy responded:

‘No, I have no idea whatsoever why he would vote against that.’

Gaetz claimed this DOJ investigation was:

‘[The federal government’s] mission creep [by] existing agencies in the federal government [involved].’

The news that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had an ongoing investigating into the Florida representative broke on Monday. It was regarding an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl approximately two years ago. It is a crime for adults to bring an underage person across state borders for sex in trade for something of value, even travel expenses.

In response to a question from Perino, McCarthy responded that he had not spoken to Gaetz yet:

‘I’ll hopefully be able to talk to him today. I’ve been traveling. We’ve going to a vaccination facility here just shortly, but later this afternoon, I hope to be able to speak with Mr. Gaetz.’
