On this Easter Sunday, President Barack Obama tweeted a family photo when Sasha and Malia were just entering the White House. The sweet photo measured how time has run through this first family. Now Malia is a 22-year-old and a Harvard University senior. Sister Sasha is 19-years-old and a sophomore at the University of Michigan. The coronavirus pandemic sent them home, though, and like many families, that changed their relationships.
President Obama tweeted his Easter message about the blessings of family:
‘This Easter, I hope we can all take some time to reflect on the blessings we enjoy and the hope we have for a brighter future. From our family to yours, have a safe and happy Easter.’
Former First Lady Michelle Obama commented in The Elle magazine about their return to the nest:
‘Our girls were supposed to have emptied out of my nest. I was sort of celebrating that they were out building their lives and allowing me the emotional space to let them go. Well, they’re back!’
Surprisingly, the time together enriched their relationship. Michelle Obama explained:
‘This time has allowed us to get some stolen moments back with our girls. Those recaptured moments have meant the world to us, and I think they’ve made our relationships with our children even stronger.’
During the quarantine, Malia and Sasha took up cooking in addition to studying. Their mother said:
‘They love the freedom of being in the kitchen, creating, experimenting.
‘There’s something about witnessing your children become adults and developing a different relationship with them. They didn’t come back into the house into the same set of rules, because I didn’t want them to miss out on independence. They came back as young women and our conversations are more peer-oriented than they are mother-to-daughter.’
Twitter world went nuts after President Obama posted his Easter message. Take a look at some of our favorites below:
