Trump Lashes Out At CNN In Defense Of Matt Gaetz

This week, CNN reported that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) had been blocked by the ex-commander-in-chief’s aides from meeting with former President Donald Trump in Florida, and now, Trump has released a familiarly rambling statement claiming that the report is false. Gaetz has been under federal investigation by the Justice Department over issues including possible child sex trafficking and potential violations of federal provisions against prostitution, and CNN reported that the former president’s aides “have urged Trump not to stick his neck out to defend Gaetz.”

Trump commented as follows:

‘Fake News CNN, relying on all anonymous sources, meaning they probably made the whole thing up, wrote a very dishonest story claiming Congressman Matt Gaetz asked for a meeting with me at Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, and was denied. This is completely false.’

Pretending like Trump has credibility is ridiculous. He has spent months pushing the utter delusion that he was the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election, despite the fact that he’s in Florida while Joe Biden is in D.C. at the White House and serving as commander-in-chief. Considering the scope of corruption that would be necessary for Trump’s claims to be true, Trump would have observers believe that local election workers, local and state canvassing boards, governors, secretaries of state, voting machine manufacturers, members of Congress and more are all somehow complicit in the imaginary election-rigging scheme that he claims is responsible for his loss. In other words — he’s not credible.

In his statement about the Gaetz story, Trump also complained about Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who’s been reported to have been among the U.S. officials with personal connections to a Chinese spy. Trump presented an allegation that Swalwell had a sexual relationship with the spy as if it’s known fact, but it’s not — conservatives are the ones who’ve run with the claim, which doesn’t appear to have ever been comprehensively confirmed.

Trump added as follows:

‘Why doesn’t CNN investigate and write about lightweight Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, who had a torrid and physical relationship with the Chinese spy Fang-Fang, but is somehow on the once-prestigious House Intelligence Committee. Swalwell, who ran for President and dropped out with a record-setting 0% in the polls, has been compromised and is a national security threat to the United States—he should be removed from the Committee immediately!’

Can Trump even explain, in real terms, what he means by his allegation that Swalwell has been “compromised,” or was the ex-president just coming up with something that sounds menacing? Swalwell immediately severed ties with the spy after federal authorities alerted him to her activities, and there is no evidence indicating that he was ever looped into anything relating to any espionage. Trump is spiraling and grasping at straws.
