Marjorie Greene Ruthlessly Fact-Checked Over Idiotic Weekend Tweet

Throughout recent days, certain high-profile far-right figures — including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — have spread the idea that President Joe Biden wants to limit Americans’ meat consumption, but this claim just isn’t accurate. It’s not just a misinterpretation — the fact is that Biden has never indicated an interest in limiting the amount of meat that Americans consume. On Sunday, CNN’s Daniel Dale fact-checked Greene’s claim about Biden’s wishes for American meat consumption, pointing out that she was spreading “absolute nonsense.”

In an original Twitter post from Sunday afternoon, Greene mockingly referred to Biden as a “hamburglar,” writing, “No burgers for thee, but just for me.” She included an image of Biden sitting with a burger. Greene’s remark about “no burgers for thee” does not in any way meaningfully reflect Biden’s actual position, but this nonsense is the kind of thing that takes off in the far-right media echo chamber.

In response to Greene’s post, Dale wrote as follows:

‘Again, this is absolute nonsense based on nothing at all Biden did or said. But in certain circles, no explanation is needed even just 2.5 days after the lie was introduced into the right-wing ecosystem. (Or re-introduced, given that similar claims have been circulated before.)’

As Dale explained it, this time around, the claim that Biden is seeking to limit Americans’ meat consumption stems from an article in The Daily Mail that insisted that Biden’s climate plan “could limit you to eat just one burger a MONTH,” which is about as realistic as claiming that the climate plan “could” (somehow) make the moon fall into the ocean. The plan “could” do a lot of things, but there’s no legitimate indication whatsoever that Biden actually hopes to limit the consumption of meat.

In making its case, The Daily Mail cited an independent and totally unrelated scientific study that concluded lowering meat consumption would lower greenhouse gas emissions, but there’s no indication that Biden has any intention of using the findings of this one solitary study to inform his climate-related policy decisions, even if The Daily Mail wants to claim that it “could” happen. A lot of things “could” happen. The study has no relationship to the Biden administration — but none of these facts stopped certain prominent conservatives — including, besides Greene, Donald Trump Jr. and Rep. Lauren Boebert — from proclaiming their allegiance to meat-eating anyway.
