Donald Trump used Twitter and Facebook as megaphones for his corruption that led up to the January 6 insurrection, when he instigated a failed coup on our Democracy. As a result, Twitter banned him for life. Facebook was not as brave.
Trump invited his followers to his Washington D.C. rally, revved them up to a fevered pitch, then aimed thousands of white nationalists with bloodlust in their eyes at the Capitol building.
Of course, he continued his Big Lie that the election was stolen from him, but only because in his twisted mind he could not bear being a “loser.” Trump called his opposition, according to The Washington Post:
‘THUGS…Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.’
Employees and advocates tried to get Facebook owner Mark Zukerberg to be harder on Trump:
‘Facebook employees said they were ‘caught in an abusive relationship’ with Trump as internal debates raged.’
Even though Trump supporters and Fox pundits cried “censorship!” Zuckerberg stalled. Then, January 6 happened with Trump posting videos telling rioters to leave, but then this:
‘Facebook suspended the president for 24 hours. The next day, Zuckerberg announced the suspension would be indefinite, saying, “We love you, you’re very special.”’
Facebook suspended him for 24 hours. The day after Zuckerberg said his suspension was indefinite:
‘We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.’
Zuckerberg said it was handing the decision to his Oversight Board, made up of 20 people:
‘Many argue private companies like Facebook shouldn’t be making these big decisions on their own. We agree.’
Twitter CFO Ned Segal said on CNBC last February:
‘The way our policies work, when you’re removed from the platform, you’re removed from the platform, whether you’re a commentator, you’re a CFO, or you are a former or current public official.’
