Rand Paul Gets Thoroughly Embarrassed During Senate Hearing

At a Tuesday Senate hearing, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health roundly rebuffed a series of ignorant lies from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) — although Fauci’s rebuttals didn’t exactly spark some kind of wide-ranging contrition on the Senator’s part. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Paul has distinguished himself through his antagonistic approach to even the most basic public health guidance. He’s acted as though Americans should at least somewhat ignore the fact that hundreds of thousands of Americans have died from a transmissible disease because the precautions imposed in response to that disease make whiny entitled Republicans like Paul slightly inconvenienced.

During the Senate hearing, Paul repeatedly pushed the idea that the National Institutes of Health has funded what Fauci summarized as “gain of function research” at a medical institute in China. The idea is that this research could have included the assembly of the virus that’s swept the world during the pandemic, and on from there, U.S. public health officials like Fauci could have thereby financially boosted this possibly pandemic-creating research — but it’s all a conspiracy theory.

Fauci commented as follows:

‘Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely and completely incorrect that — the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan institute.’

As Paul cut him off and continued to press the point, Fauci rebuffed each one of his claims. A certain doctor, for instance, would not be conducting any underway gain of function research in China at all — that doctor, Fauci explained, would be working place right here in the United States.

Notably — Paul has no public health expertise on Fauci’s level whatsoever, but experience matters! Paul has previously worked as an ophthalmologist, but he nevertheless presented his armchair research as gospel truth and repeatedly categorically dismissed Fauci’s own description of relevant circumstances. After Paul went round and round with the same point, Fauci reiterated the following once more:

‘We have not funded gain of function research on this virus in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. No matter how many times you say it, it didn’t happen.’
