Although Donald Trump is sitting down at Mar-a-Lago doing his best laughing Jabba The Hut imitation, he has made a powerful enemy. Yes, his shoe-licking pawn House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) kicked Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) off of her leadership role. But he may have cleaved his party in two. Look at this.
Over 100 Republicans have announced in a letter that they will form a third party if the GOP does not meet their demands. Now that Trump has stolen their party, many find the result of that so egregious and anti-democracy they must leave. Their Republican Party now runs on the fuel of anger, hatred, and cruelty. Cross the ex-president and, like Cheney, anyone would be shunned in the most vicious of ways.
On a voice vote, she was expelled from her leadership role. The leaders chose this method over a secret vote to prevent an embarrassing number from showing up — for either McCarthy or Cheney.
Prior to the 100 Republican’s letter’s release on Thursday, the comment to The New York Times was:
‘When in our democratic republic, forces of conspiracy, division, and despotism arise, it is the patriotic duty of citizens to act collectively in defense of liberty and justice.’
An organizer of the effort and a former Trump-era Department of Homeland Security official, Miles Taylor wrote The New York Times Op-Ed article. It was printed anonymously as was a book. Taylor said:
‘This is a first step.’
“This is us saying that a group of more than 100 prominent Republicans think that the situation has gotten so dire with the Republican Party that it is now time to seriously consider whether an alternative might be the only option.’
The list ran the gamut of Republican positions:
‘The list of people signing the statement includes former officials at both the state and national level who once were governors, members of Congress, ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, state legislators and Republican Party chairmen.’
The signators included Governors Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania and Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey, according to Reuters. In addition, these Republicans will sign it:
‘Former Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters and former Representatives Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Reid Ribble of Wisconsin and Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma.’
Reuters wrote:
‘[T]he letter, headlined: “A Call For American Renewal,” is an exploratory move toward forming a breakaway party, two of its organizers said. The group is dismayed by what it says is a modern Republican Party driven by its allegiance to Trump, who continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen from him.’
At this time, we do not know who the others were. Reuters further explained their situation:
‘The letter signatories, who include former ambassadors, governors, congressional members and Cabinet secretaries, want the Republican Party to return to “principled” leadership and reject division and conspiracy theories, or face a new party dedicated to fighting for Republicans such as Cheney and against fearmongering and lies.’
