Urgent Firing Of Disgraced Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Called For By Congressman

As the nation continues to deal with the fallout of the Trump era, Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-N.J.) has now called on the three new Biden-appointed members of the Board of Governors at the U.S. Postal Service to secure the swift removal of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. The controversial Postmaster General has faced stark criticism for his reckless handling of the Postal Service while on the job, with dramatically declining on-time delivery rates and recent serious concerns about how effectively that the agency would handle mail-in ballots under DeJoy’s leadership.

Although the Postal Service effectively handled mail-in ballots for the 2020 election cycle, whether or not that would be the case should not be an open question! Going forward, DeJoy has proposed, among other new developments, making slowdowns in the delivery speeds of billions of pieces of mail permanent for the supposed sake of cutting costs — although fundamentally, the Postal Service is a public service. It is not a private business that should be reasonably affected primarily by money-making concerns.

Appointing — and firing — the Postmaster General is the responsibility of the Board of Governors at the Postal Service rather than the president or anyone else. In his new letter to the newly confirmed Board of Governors members Ronald Stroman, Amber McReynolds, and Anton Hajjar, Pascrell wrote in part as follows:

‘Saving our Postal Service from the unprecedented destruction carried out by Donald Trump and Louis DeJoy over the past year must be a top priority. Therefore, I urge you to convene your colleagues on the Board of Governors at the next available opportunity to move for the immediate removal of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy… Mr. DeJoy’s continued gross mismanagement, self-inflicted nationwide delays in mail delivery, and rampant financial conflicts of interest justly warrant his expeditious removal, so that the Board may appoint in his place a qualified and competent Postmaster General prepared to lead with bold solutions to save our Post Office.’

Notably, The Washington Post revealed this week that DeJoy is under federal criminal investigation over issues involving donations made by employees of his old company, New Breed Logistics. While leading that company, DeJoy is alleged to have pressured employees to donate to certain Republican candidates and then reimbursed those employees, through bonuses, for the contributions — which could easily be illegal.
