Cheney Call Out GOP Congressman Paul Gosar For Being A Traitor

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) isn’t interested in ignoring lies about the true nature of the January attack on the Capitol that have been perpetrated by her Republican colleagues. On Twitter, POLITICO’s Josh Gerstein reported that Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) claimed during a House committee hearing that a police officer had been “lying in wait” for Trump supporter Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed during the riot while trying to forcibly enter an area that could have granted her personal access to members of Congress. Cheney characterized Gosar’s deceptive description of what happened as “disgusting.”

Babbitt was part of an openly murderous mob that was violently swarming through the Capitol building, hunting top government leaders. That’s just the basic reality of what took place. Characterizing her death, while unmistakably tragic, as an “execution” — which Gosar also did — is brazenly deceptive. Cheney commented as follows:

‘On January 6, as the violent mob advanced on the House chamber, I was standing near @RepGosar and helped him open his gas mask. The Capitol Police led us to safety. It is disgusting and despicable to see Gosar lie about that day and smear the men and women who defended us.’

Gosar’s attempt to gloss over the reality of what took place mirrors his own ignorant enabling of the riot in the first place via his propagation of brazen lies about last year’s presidential election. Ignoring the reality of what actually happened also helps allow for it to potentially happen again.

Gosar is known as one of the most far-right members of Congress. Notably, even his own siblings have denounced him — after the Capitol riot, and after Gosar’s vote in Congress against the certification of the presidential election results from his own state, “several” of his siblings began to advocate for his removal from Congress, as the Los Angeles Times reports. Siblings of the Congressman also appeared in campaign ads for a Democratic opponent who (unsuccessfully) ran against him back in 2018.

Cheney, meanwhile, has kept up her opposition to the most overtly pro-Trump elements of the GOP in the time since House Republicans voted to remove her from party leadership over her public repudiations of the lie from former President Donald Trump that last year’s election was somehow rigged for Biden. That deranged and dangerous lie drove the Capitol riot, and it was used as a cover for much of the opposition against the certification of Biden’s presidential election victory by Congress. Trump has kept pushing the lie since leaving office.
