Attorney Sidney Powell, who was at one point a part of former President Donald Trump’s legal team according to the ex-commander-in-chief himself, has been ordered to appear at a sanctions hearing in Detroit, Michigan, in connection to a lawsuit in which she sought to overturn Joe Biden’s presidential election victory in the state. Other attorneys who were involved in that case, including Greg Rohl, Scott Hagerstrom, and Stefanie Junttila, have been ordered to appear at the same hearing. Federal Judge Linda Parker has been considering sanctions on Powell and the others at the request of Michigan state Attorney General Dana Nessel.
The sanctions hearing is scheduled for the afternoon of July 6. Powell, like certain other Trump allies, fueled her efforts to overturn Biden’s victory with brazenly false claims about the integrity of last year’s presidential election. She claimed that a vast election fraud conspiracy unfolded, but no legitimate evidence for this supposed conspiracy has ever turned up. Concurrently, no court has ever accepted the claim that fraud was responsible for Biden’s victory. Now, besides the looming threat of sanctions in Michigan, Powell is also facing a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit from the voting technology company Dominion Voting Systems, which has been a subject of pro-Trump election-related conspiracy theories.
Nessel has said that Powell and the other attorneys involved in the case issued statements that they “knew were misleading” in service of conspiracy theories that stood — and still stand — to “dismantle our system of democracy.” Nessel also observed that Powell made “multiple stunning admissions regarding her own statements, even going so far as to say, ‘no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.'” It’s true — in connection to that defamation lawsuit, she insisted that she’d never presented her election claims as so-called statements of settled fact, which is ludicrous. She has consistently characterized her election-related falsehoods as definite truth.
Going forward, Trump has continued to propagate the lie that he was the rightful winner of last year’s presidential election. At this point, it seems like there’s pretty much nothing that could get these people to meaningfully acknowledge reality.
