In their great daring escape, Texas state Democrats broke out of Governor Greg Abbott’s (R) prison of draconian voter restrictions. But this is not a Texas problem or a Democratic problem. No, this is for every American regardless of race, religion, state of residence, or political party. These 50 Texas Democrats are leading a Paul Revere warning to Washington, D.C. The distant Democrats must wake up. This is a war for the very democracy we have taken for granted. These brave soldiers in the war against autocracy demand, “Listen to our message.”

Abbott said on Monday that the Democratic legislators whose battle plan was to make a run for it and keep a quorum from the Republicans’ grasp would only succeed temporarily in his special legislative session. The Texas GOP has been trying to plant a series of explosive election voter suppression bills. When they return, as they eventually must, the governor will have them arrested. Does not sound like a democracy, does it?

In their bold move, Lone Star State House Democrats chartered two planes to bring reality to D.C. Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R) have a series of prison-like restrictions to keep Texans Democrats from voting. The Republicans knew that playing dirty, cheating was the only way to stay in office. And that has become their only reason for existing. Theirs was a truly wicked maneuver.

Abbott told KVUE that he vowed to arrest the Democrats who went to Washington. Then, he would force them to stay within the Texas Capitol “until they get their job done:”

‘If these people want to be hanging out wherever they’re hanging out on this taxpayer-paid junket, they’re going to have to be prepared to do it for well over a year. As soon as they come back in the state of Texas, they will be arrested, they will be cabined inside the Texas Capitol until they get their job done.’

Last May, the Democrats staged a walkout, so Warden Abbott knew what they would attempt during the special 30-day special session. The GOP’s bill struck down :

  • 24-hour voting centers
  • voting centers in outdoor structures
  • early and curbside voting,
  • straight-ticket voting and
  • drop boxes

Warden Abbott threatened that he would “call a special session after special session after special session:”

‘[The Speaker of Texas’ House can] issue a call to have these members arrested.[I] can and I will continue to call a special session after special session after special session all the way up until election next year.’
