Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) has been labeled a maverick for simply standing up for democracy. The rest of her party has fewer than a handful of like representatives. Instead, they are choosing to embrace Donald Trump’s authoritarian unreal world. She said that the king has no clothes, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) punished her by stripping her of her House Republican Conference Chair role. Conversely, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) snapped her up.
Cheney has become the lone Republican on the House Committee to investigate the January 6 failed coup. She spoke about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to CNN:
”And I would certainly hope that the minority leader will be guided by that as he makes his choices.’
In her only interview, she talked about what it has been like to sit on the panel investigating the January 6 insurrection. She continued:
‘It’s very important that we have members who are committed to upholding the rule of law and members who are committed to their oaths to the Constitution.’
CNN commented that it was doubtful McCarthy would be interested in what she had to say. He was rabidly opposed to the committee’s creation. Regardless, the Wyoming representative will sit on the investigative committee. Thus far, the California representative has not appointed anyone to be on Pelosi’s committee. He said that he has not yet decided whether to place any people on it.
Pundits speculated about how McCarthy would view that committee. Some think he might place a mixture of moderates and conservative Republicans there. Others say they anticipate him turning the committee into a circus complete with fire-breathing members such as Jim Jordon (R-OH). McCarthy told CNN upon learning Cheney was on Pelosi’s January 6 committee:
‘I was shocked.’
Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) had to step in and break up a shouting match between Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Dr. Anthony Fauci. Director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The good doctor finally turned to Jordan and told him to “shut your mouth.”
Jordan demanded the virologist tell him when the pandemic would finally end. When will the health mandates lift? When will the public get its right to shop in person? He shouted at the doctor, and Fauci responded, The Daily Beast reported:
‘You’re indicating liberty and freedom. I look at it as a public health measure to prevent people from dying and going to hospital.’
Fauci promised that should people get vaccinated by July 1, “life will return to normal.” That was also the day that Representative Cheney joined the January 6 committee.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made a splash when she commented on her Republican committee member. The Speaker announced that the Wyoming representative would sit on the Select Committee to investigate the failed coup:
‘We’re very honored and proud that she has agreed to serve on the committee.’
The representative told CNN:
‘I will absolutely stand for the truth and I will reject partisanship — wherever it comes in. And I think that’s been very clear from the beginning of this: my obligation is to the Constitution.’
Cheney observed that the other members of the committee, who are all Democrats, have been welcoming and professional so far. When it comes to her worries about the committee’s work turning into a politicized effort, she said:
‘My presence makes it bipartisan, but what is even more important to me is the way that the committee is going to conduct itself. And I’m very dedicated to operating in a way that really does reflect the gravity of this attack.’
