Manchin Busted Taking Cash Donations From Murdoch/Fox News

We have wondered why Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has withheld his vote to end or at least modify the filibuster. This lone man stands between an old tradition and a democracy on the edge of a dictatorship. Is that a little extreme? Well, consider that the Republican states have implemented a series of draconian laws to exclude Black and Brown voters, older voters, and people with disabilities. These are the ones who often go for the Democrats. But Republicans have brought us to a war that we can no longer avoid. So why is Manchin holding our troops up to allow the Donald Trump-led Republicans to overrun us?

Friday morning CNBC broke the news that Fox News’ parent company’s political action committee (PAC) has been donating to the West Virginian reelection campaign. The media giant and owner of Fox, Rupert Murdoch, already donated $1,500 to Manchin’s reelection campaign in June, according to a legally required disclosure to the Federal Election Commission and the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Manchin’s campaign raised just over $1.4 million in the second quarter.

This, as Fox News conservatives and those elsewhere have been pressuring the Senator to stand as the pivotal obstruction. He would be perfectly placed to limit President Joe Biden’s “ambitious and expensive” strategy, according to CNBC. What interesting timing.

What Manchin clearly did not understand was that once the senator has provided shelter for the Republicans and outlived his usefulness to them, they will bring the battle to West Virginia and support his opponent in the “deep-red state.”

The Democrats must have every senator on board with the president’s agenda, because their lead only comes with Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote.

Manchin wrote an op-ed in The West Virginia Gazette in an attempt to explain why he opposed tanking the filibuster and his fellow Democrat’s For the People Act, a voting rights bill. It was his gauzy explanation at best.

But now, Texas state Democrats have walked out of their offices, away from jobs and family, and flown to Washington  D.C., according to The USA Today newspaper. One woman even postponed her wedding, so serious as these representatives of Texas are. They have been trying to try to convince him of the value of the two federal laws in states run recklessly by Republicans.

At the same time, billionaire Charles Koch, a strong right-wing activist has been lobbying Manchin, too. Then, there have been the big corporations lobbying him to fight against the two bills, which were part of President Biden’s generation-changing opportunity to restore the middle class and support those who are working poor. These have been Manchin’s citizens.

In the second quarter, Manchin also received contributions from many big corporations. These included “Herbalife, Honeywell, Pfizer, and T-Mobile.”

During the 2020 election, CRP data showed that Fox Chair Murdoch donated $10,000 to the Fox Corp. PAC. CEO of Fox Corp and son of the owner, Lachlan Murdoch, donated $2,000-plus to the committee.

This PAC gave over $180,000 to candidates with equal amounts going to each party. But do Americans want corporations ruling as an oligarchy or democracy? Manchin has been on the wrong side of this issue from the beginning.
