Recently, former President Donald Trump and other prominent conservatives have been speaking out against U.S. Olympians. Trump even claimed in a speech that “wokeism makes you lose, ruins your mind, and ruins you as a person,” which is just… what? What does that even mean? He made those remarks in a discussion of the U.S. women’s soccer team, while other right-wingers have singled out gymnast Simone Biles for criticism after she withdrew from certain match-ups out of mental health concerns. Besides the foundational necessity of addressing such concerns, these issues could, of course, directly impact Biles’s actual physical performance — but right-wingers nonetheless flipped out.
In a new video, the anti-Trump conservative group known as The Lincoln Project mocked the prominent conservatives who’ve lashed out at the Olympians. The group referred to these high-ranking conservatives as “born to lose.” As a narrator in the new video put it:
‘Champions aren’t born. They’re made — through dedication, hard work, determination. It requires sacrifice, teamwork, humility, and overcoming obstacles to triumph over competition. But some opponents are different. They don’t play by rules. They didn’t earn their place on the field, and they despise champions that don’t look like themselves. Their mission will fail, because they were born to lose. And you — you were made to win.’

Some of the criticism from right-wing media types targeting Biles has been truly bizarre. Turning Point USA leader Charlie Kirk, for instance, proclaimed that Americans are “raising a generation of weak people like Simone Biles.” Kirk, notably, is a prominent Trump ally — Trump delivered his dubious remarks about the supposed impact of “wokeism” on athletic performance (again — what?) at a recent conference put on by Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA.
