GOP Senator Comes Out Against Ron DeSantis’ COVID Nonsense

What are they thinking? Governors Ron DeSantis (R) and Texas’ Greg Abbott (R) have both banned mask mandates in public schools. Schools begin opening as early as next week, yet these two jokers ride into town on a horse that only goes backward. All the while, they are shouting at the top of their lungs “no masks.” It gets worse.

The delta variant is far more contagious than the original COVID-19. Texas has the second-highest death rate from coronavirus 53,788 according to Google statistics. What is more alarming is that the state has 11,371 news cases per day. That is almost 25 percent of the nation’s new cases per day. For comparison, California had 4,129 new cases per day, and  New York had 4,537 per day.

Florida came in third in the number of deaths. It had 39,695 deaths. In Miami-Dade County alone there were 6,472 deaths

During his interview with CNN’s State of the Union Co-Host Dana Bash, Senator Ron Cassidy (R-LA) said:

‘I’m a conservative. I think you govern best when you govern closest to the people being governed. And if a local community is having a — their ICU is full, and the people at the local schools see that they’ve got to make sure they stay open because otherwise children miss out for another year of school, and they put in policy, then the local officials should be listened to.

‘I don’t want to top down from Washington, D.C. I don’t want to top down from a governor’s office.’

Local officials had hoped that the coronavirus pandemic would have been pretty much conquered by the time school opened. They were not the only ones frustrated. President Biden urged DeSantis to just “get out of the way.” The Florida governor rudely shot back, according to the NBC affiliate WJHG:

‘[I do not want to]hear a blip about COVID from you, thank you. Why don’t you do your job?’

Senator Cassidy is also a physician. He said that if COVID-19 conditions in his state were terrible, he would be fine with making “those decisions best for their community:”

‘When it comes to local conditions, if my hospital is full and my vaccination rate is low and infection rate is going crazy, we should allow local officials to make those decisions best for their community.’

Cassidy’s home state, Louisiana has also seen a disconcerting surge in COVID-19 cases, too.
