Owen Shroyer, a host with the far-right media outlet InfoWars, has now been criminally charged in connection to his actions on January 6 of this year at the Capitol. Shroyer has been charged with illegally entering a restricted area at the Capitol and disorderly conduct after federal authorities were alerted, via an anonymous tip, to footage that apparently showed him at the top of a set of stairs on the east side of the building. Shroyer had also been photographed on a stage at a different location outside the Capitol alongside InfoWars founder Alex Jones, but Jones has not been charged.

Prosecutors obtained video footage showing Shroyer speaking to a crowd on January 6, saying: “Today we march for the Capitol because on this historic January 6, 2021, we have to let our congressmen and -women know, and we have to let Mike Pence know, they stole the election, we know they stole it, and we aren’t going to accept it!” Obviously, these comments suggest purposeful participation in the criminal acts of that day. On Friday, Shroyer spoke on-air about the charges that he is now facing and claimed that he is innocent. As he put it:

‘A couple hours ago, I was informed by my attorney that there is a warrant out for my arrest with allegations involving January 6, and I will have to turn myself in Monday morning… There’s a lot of questions, some I have answers to, some I don’t. I’m not going to be getting into more of this today on the air. And I plan on declaring innocence of these charges because I am.’

Shroyer is not the first person with a connection to InfoWars to be charged in connection to the Capitol riot. Samuel Christopher Montoya, who was identified by a local ABC affiliate as a “staffer” for InfoWars, has also been charged, and his charges include entering and remaining in a restricted building, impeding passage through the Capitol complex, and more. Seemingly unlike Shroyer, Montoya entered the Capitol building and even recorded video footage of the deadly shooting of fellow riot participant Ashli Babbitt, and in his case, “a family member tipped off the FBI that he was inside the Capitol building” and had recorded that video, according to the same ABC station. Capitol riot-tied federal criminal charges against two people tied to InfoWars certainly clarify the nature of the organization — in short, it’s promoting terroristic extremism.

Shroyer and Montoya are among hundreds of people who have been charged over their participation in the Capitol riot. Some have taken plea deals, but most cases remain ongoing. Meanwhile, Trump continues to promote the lie that last year’s presidential election was somehow rigged for Joe Biden, which inspired the riot in the first place.
