Some of us are old enough to remember when Republicans clutched their pearls every time they thought someone was “politicizing” a tragedy, but the GOP and Fox News, have repeatedly bashed President Biden for his attempts to pull our country out of a 20-year war knowing that it would not do him any favors politically. Raising that admitting that three other presidents promised to end the war but didn’t. Biden, who watched some of his own children leave to go overseas to serve in the military, has actually done it.
On Thursday, during a press conference in which President Biden called on Fox News’ Peter Doocy, who regularly embarrasses himself by asking inane questions of press secretary Jen Psaki. In true Fox News form, Doocy used his time to ask questions of the president to criticize him and then ask the same question that Biden has answered repeatedly and answered the same way every time.
‘Mr. President, there had not been a US service member killed in combat in Afghanistan since February of 2020. You set a deadline, you pulled troops out, you sent troops back in, and now 12 Marines are dead. You said the buck stops with you. Do you bear any responsibility for the way that things have unfolded in the past two weeks?’
The reason no American soldier has been killed in the past year and a half was that Trump made a deal with the Taliban to leave by May. The longer that leave was delayed, the more risk that attacks would begin again. Biden has said that he takes responsibility for every decision he’s made, but his decisions had to be based on a deal he didn’t make and the risk to American soldiers in staying longer.
‘I bear responsibility for fundamentally everything…the former president made a deal with the Taliban that he would get all American forces out of Afghanistan by May 1. In return, the commitment was made, and that was a year before, in return, he was given a commitment that the Taliban would continue to attack others but not attack any American forces…is that accurate, to the best of your knowledge?’
Doocey continued to push rather than let Biden finish, again asking the same questions Biden was already answering and had answered several times. See video of the exchange below:
