Texas doctors are among those fed up with the relentlessly lackadaisical approach to the COVID-19 pandemic maintained by Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott and certain Republican allies of his who are in positions of power. Abbott has, for instance, consistently fought the imposition of mask mandates in schools, even though policies demanding the wearing of face masks could be a critical effort to keep students and staff members alike from getting ill and potentially dying. Dr. David Portugal, a Texas cardiologist affiliated with the advocacy group known as the Committee to Protect Health Care, characterized the policies of Texas Republicans as “killing their fellow Texans.” Children are among those who have suffered due to COVID-19.
As Portugal put it:
‘Governor Abbott has failed us. A Republican state legislature has failed us. These leaders should be held accountable and be asked to explain how they can justify taking actions that are killing their fellow Texans.’
Dr. Elena Jimenez-Gutierrez, who specializes in internal medicine, also had dismal observations, adding as follows:
‘Hospital staff and resources are stretched to the breaking point… Doctors and other health care workers see every day how too many Texans are needlessly getting sick, including many children when we know this disease can be prevented.’
Like other Republican governors who’ve opted to behave similarly amid the pandemic, Abbott is sticking by his administration’s approach. Elsewhere, the Committee to Protect Health Care has taken on other Republican extremism amid the pandemic. In the wake of the decision by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) to promote the potential of an anti-parasitic drug known as ivermectin as a treatment against COVID-19, the committee asked the Senator to stop such nonsense.
As Dr. Bob Freedland, who serves as Wisconsin State Lead for the organization, pointedly phrased it:
‘As not just a physician but also a resident of Wisconsin, it’s shocking and appalling that any grown person, let alone our elected senator, would promote Ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19. To be quite clear, Ivermectin is a drug used to deworm livestock, and researchers haven’t found it to have the benefits against COVID-19 that some like Johnson try to claim it has. Senator Ron Johnson, if you really want to save lives from COVID-19, please stop horsing around and start promoting measures that actually work, like masks and vaccines.’
