This week, former President Donald Trump formally endorsed a challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who has distinguished herself as one of the few Congressional Republicans willing to go against the party line on just about any issue. Most prominently, Cheney has remained steadfast in her commitment to holding Trump accountable for inciting the riot at the Capitol in January, and at present, she’s one of two House Republicans on the House committee investigating that riot. After Trump’s endorsement of Cheney’s challenger, Cheney spoke out to insist that she was unmoved. As she put it on Twitter: “Bring it.”

In other words, Cheney has no intentions of capitulating to an insurrectionist. In his statement endorsing Cheney’s challenger (who is named Harriet Hageman), Trump characterized Cheney as the “number one provider of sound bites” for Democrats. Cheney replied to Trump’s statement with the following:

‘Here’s a sound bite for you: Bring it.’

In a longer statement, Cheney elaborated on her thoughts regarding the latest developments in her Congressional race, adding as follows:

‘I am honored to represent the people of Wyoming and proud of my strong conservative record. I look forward to an extended public debate about the importance of the rule of law and the solemn duty of elected officials to uphold their oath to the Constitution. It is tragic that some in this race have sacrificed those principles, and their duty to the people of Wyoming, out of fear and in favor of loyalty to a former president who deliberately misled the American people about the 2020 election, provoked an attack on the U.S. Capitol, and failed to perform his duties as president as the violence ensued.’

In her role on the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, Cheney has committed to pursuing the facts surrounding what happened on January 6. She has specifically singled out Trump in this fact-finding quest. As she put it during the first public hearing of that riot investigation committee, observers “must… know what happened every minute of that day in the White House — every phone call, every conversation, every meeting — leading up to, during, and after the attack.” To that end, the riot investigation committee recently issued a slew of requests to government agencies, seeking records covering critical points of Trump’s tenure.
