In a new Fox News survey, a majority of respondents approve of the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, meaning that Republican complaints about the Biden administration’s policies regarding the U.S. presence in that country clearly aren’t winning. The removal of the U.S. military presence from Afghanistan was completed last month, after Biden opted to go through with plans to withdraw that were set up in the Trump era. Biden has explained that he felt as though his two choices were completing the withdrawal or upping the pace of fighting, and the latter option would entail potential harm that he would not accept, as he explained.

In the new Fox survey, 55 percent of overall respondents said that they approved of the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, while 40 percent of respondents said that they disapproved of it. The poll found lower levels of approval for the Biden administration’s handling of the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, with just 37 percent approving and a full 59 percent disapproving. Amid the final stages of the withdrawal, a suicide bomber struck a Kabul airport and killed numerous bystanders, including 13 U.S. service members. At the time, Trump had already publicly called for Biden to resign over the circumstances of the Afghanistan withdrawal — although the U.S. either evacuated or facilitated the evacuation of over 120,000 people from Afghanistan during the final portions of the withdrawal, which isn’t exactly the mark of an administration that doesn’t know what they’re doing!

Meanwhile, Fox News also released survey numbers this weekend revealing that although overall approval for Biden’s job performance has dropped slightly in recent months, it remains above the average level of overall approval recorded for Trump’s job performance when he was still in office. In the new survey, 50 percent of overall respondents indicated that they approved of Biden’s overall job performance, down from 56 percent back in a June Fox survey, while 49 percent of respondents said that they disapproved. At no point during his term did FiveThirtyEight record a weighted average of Trump’s overall approval that hit 50 percent. Biden’s approval hanging on at such a level suggests that Democrats could do well in the upcoming midterm elections.
