In a new Quinnipiac University poll, majorities of Americans support both major spending bills that are currently being promoted by Democratic leaders. The bills include a bipartisan infrastructure agreement that was recently passed by the Senate but has yet to clear the House and a socially geared plan focusing on what’s been termed “human infrastructure,” which includes child care, care for elders, and related items. At present, the “human infrastructure” bill, which has a price tag of $3.5 trillion, is in limbo in part thanks to opposition to its scope from Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

Meanwhile, Republicans have opposed the “human infrastructure” bill essentially in unison. The Quinnipiac survey, however, reveals that a full 57 percent of Americans say that they support the $3.5 trillion legislative initiative, including 92 percent of Democrats, 50 percent of independents, and 28 percent of Republicans. Meanwhile, 62 percent of respondents indicated in the survey that they support the bipartisan infrastructure deal, which focuses on issues like shoring up the nation’s roadways and expanding broadband internet access in rural communities. That 62 percent of Americans in favor of the bill includes 85 percent of Democrats, 62 percent of independents, and 38 percent of Republicans.

Both of the bills in question amount to jobs bills. If passed, the legislation would support the creation and furtherance of employment within the covered initiatives. Before Biden won the election and took office, Trump and Republican allies of his repeatedly predicted that a Biden presidency would mean economic disaster for the United States, but such has not unfolded. Instead, the country’s economic recovery from the initial onset of the pandemic has continued. These factors could support Democratic successes in the upcoming midterm elections, when the president’s party will be hoping to maintain control of both chambers of Congress. As Republicans have formulated their plans of political attack, they’ve been sticking ever more closely to a fundamental disconnection from reality through means like promoting lies about the integrity of last year’s presidential election.
