After weeks of negotiations over raising the debt ceiling, a fight that often turn contentious whenever a Democrat is in the White House and Republicans developed sudden concerns over the national debt, it appears a short-term compromise, which kicks the can down the road to December to make a real decision to increase the debt ceiling limit.
During White House press secretary Jen Psaki’s press briefing on Wednesday, she answered questions about McConnell and the GOP’s likelihood of using the extended amount of time as a short-term “solution” to the problem. Psaki reminded members of the press how we got to this point in the conversation.
‘We’re at this point because Republicans in Congress treated the savings accounts and retirement savings of the American people, Social Security checks of retirees, and veterans benefits like a game of Monopoly, putting the stability and security of the American people at risk.’
She also reminded them that McConnell’s offer for an extension isn’t really a solution and just prolongs the process. Since that process has not yet been completed, there is still time, she said, for Republicans like McConnell to act like “adults” and join the Democrats in ensuring that the full faith and credit of the United States will not be downgraded.
The GOP may think of the debt ceiling debate as some kind of game of keep away, but just as a reminder, elderly Americans would miss payments, federal employees in places like our local Social Security offices would be furloughed, and the economy of the United States, which influences the economies of every other country, would fail.
