Liz Cheney is ready to play hard-ball. She will find out who is behind the failed attempt to overthrow democracy and will throw the book at anyone who dares defy its subpoenas. Do not mess with this committee, because they are deadly serious. Every one of them.
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney (R) and a no-nonsense mother who wrote somewhat kinky novels is showing her mettle. She said the committee will have former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows’ and former Department of Defense official Kashyap Patel’s depositions later in the week. The entire committee is in line with that, according to Reuters Cheney said:
‘In general, people are going to have to appear, or, you know, we will move contempt charges against them. We’ll see if they show up. If they show up, we’ll be prepared.’
The Select Committee, chaired by Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), intends to press for criminal contempt charges against those who think that Donald Trump is still at the wheel and subpoenas can be ignored.
The first round of subpoenas went to four of Trump’s top former administration members:
‘[C]hief of staff Mark Meadows, former White House adviser Steve Bannon, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, and former Defense Department official Kash Patel.’
Bannon is refusing to cooperate with the Select Committee and faces criminal contempt charges. The committee will give everyone the opportunity to cooperate, but not for long.
Another member of the Select Committee, Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) highlights the fight we are all in to save democracy. The book’s title nails the situation, Midnight in Washington: How We Almost Lost Our Democracy and Still Could, published by Penguin Random House:
‘Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years, requiring unprecedented vigilance against the growing and dangerous appeal of authoritarianism.’

Trump fired up the mob on January 6 and then shot them, his most lethal weapon, at the American Capitol Building to halt the certification of President Joe Biden. Well over 600 of the enraged mob now face criminal charges.
It is good to see the Select Committee taking this approach. Without consequences, the Democrats are just asking for another repeat.
