Ah, Peter Doocy. When will you learn that White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki is in a completely different league than you are? We see your attempts to be the Fox News rabble-rouser, and while admirable, quite frankly, you will never be able to outthink this remarkable woman.
The New York Times notes that she “may be the most prominent spokeswoman in American politics:”
‘Hashtag #jenpsaki has 139 million views on TikTok, and its pun of a cousin, #psakibomb (the P in Psaki is silent — get it?), has racked up more than 13 million. She posed for Annie Leibovitz in Vogue magazine and answered questions on the N.P.R. show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” Olivia Rodrigo stood next to her for a briefing.’
But even Doocy had good words for the press secretary, praising her “professionalism and good humor:”
‘It never feels like I’m getting smacked down or vice versa. I understand why it looks like that, some of the ways that stuff gets clipped, but it doesn’t feel like that in the room.’
During Monday’s White House briefing, Doocy asked whether President Joe Biden had broken a promise to the American people. Our President had said he would not get involved with the Department of Justice (DOJ) as the previous administration had done. But actually, all President Biden had done was express an opinion about what he thought the prosecutory consequences for Donald Trump’s weaponized mob who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 should be.
Psaki defended her boss, saying:
‘The president continues to believe that Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days in our democracy. He also continues to believe that the Department of Justice has the purview and the independence to make decisions about prosecutions.’
Doocy came back with a strong volley:
‘You say that that is his view but that is not what he said.’
However, Psaki was winning the game:
‘I just conveyed what his view is and that is also how he has operated, how he has governed and how he will continue to govern.’
Still, Doocy refused to give up. He pointed out that President Biden had promised not to “do what former President Trump does.” He would not abuse the DOJ by using them as a weapon against his enemies. Psaki leaped upon the opportunity to clear some of the leftover Trump air fouling our country:
‘Well, since you give me the opportunity, the former president used his office to incite an insurrection, he put political pressure on senior DOJ officials to propagate lies about the election to the point where they threatened to resign en masse. I think there’s hardly a comparison there.’
Doocy still would not give ground. He said that Biden promised he would “not pressure the Justice Department.” Psaki turned, picked up Doocy’s ball, and tossed it right back:
‘And he has not.’
Still, even Doocey speaks fairly about our press secretary:
‘When I got back from my wedding, she made a point to tell everybody in the briefing room that I just got married. That’s a transcript I can print out and show to my kids one day.’
The New Yorker writer Jelani Cobb tweeted, according to The Vogue Magazine:
‘I really should not be impressed with a calm, professional, and factual press briefing, but I am where I am.’
