GOP Senator Weakens Trump With Public Un-Endorsment For ’24

It appears that Donald Trump is being coy about whether he will run for a third time in the 20204 presidential election. The packed rallies certainly feed his vast gaping ego, and he can use a possible campaign run to mine a boatload of money. But will he really run? If the former president does run, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced to the world that he would not vote for Trump.

The Louisiana senator appeared with Axios on HBO’s Mike Allen. When asked about a Trump nomination, he responded with “I don’t know that”  Whether there is a Trump campaign number three is still up in the air:

‘President Trump is the first president, in the Republican side at least, to lose the House, the Senate and the presidency in four years. Elections are about winning. [I]f you want to win the presidency, and hopefully that’s what voters are thinking about, I think he might.’

Allen delved deeper into whether it was possible that Trump really could lose in the primaries, Cassidy said:

‘But it’s clear you ain’t voting for him.’

The senator shot right back:

‘I’m not.’

Cassidy was not certain that Trump would even be on the ticket in 2024:

‘That’s a theoretical that I don’t think will come to pass. I don’t mean to duck, but the truth is you could ask me [about] a lot of people, if they are fit. Point is, I don’t think he’ll be our nominee.’

Seven GOP senators, including Cassidy, voted to convict Trump for incitement of an insurrection during his impeachment number two last February. However, the former president won out in a 57 to 43 vote.

The ex-president has not formally announced a presidential run in the next election. However, he has apparently railed himself in enough that people wonder what he will do. Looking at his comments and actions, it appears he has already made up his mind. But Donald J. Trump for the 2024 president has the ring of a cracked bell. Thud.

Last weekend, the ex-president went to an Iowa rally. The state kicks off many campaign runs, both Republican and Democratic, CNN wrote:

‘Trump has also sent out a number of midterm endorsements in recent weeks, hired aides in key states and has argued in media interviews that he would easily clinch the GOP nomination should he run.’

  • ‘People assume that if you’re moderate in tone and you wish to connect with others for a common goal of improving our country in some way, you don’t have true colors — whatever those colors are supposed to be, red or blue. “I’m doing my job,” the senator added. “Now, I may take some flack. But that’s OK.”

Cassidy hates to be considered a “moderate:”

‘I’m a conservative who happens to be a senator The only way you get something done to advance our country is to work with other people. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way. And if I can work with other people and make our country better, then I’m a conservative who’s got his job done.’

In an Axios tweet, Cassidy said to Allen:

‘Bill Cassidy is 1 of 7 GOP senators who voted to convict Trump before he left office’

‘@mikeallen: After that, Louisiana’s Republican Party censured you.

Cassidy: I slept very well that night.

Allen: It’s clear you ain’t votin’ for [Trump if he runs again].

Cassidy: I’m not.’
