Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) went after former New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie on Twitter this week after Christie came out with new rounds of commentary against former President Donald Trump. Among other examples, Christie observed to Axios after a call-out from Trump himself that “what I will say is this: When I ran for reelection in 2013, I got 60 percent of the vote. When he ran for reelection, he lost to Joe Biden.” Kinzinger pointed out, though, how for all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Christie’s decision to distance himself from Trump in some capacity, he was one of the first mainstream political figures to throw their support behind Trump’s presidential candidacy.

Christie originally ran against Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, but he didn’t get very far, and he rather promptly endorsed Trump as the race went on. Kinzinger, meanwhile, commented as follows on Twitter this week:

‘As [Chris Christie] tries to pretend to be both anti-Trump and pro-trump, will be interesting to hear about what made him decide to be the first mainstream politician to glowingly endorse him.’

During a recent event put on by the Republican Jewish Coalition, Christie told the crowd that Republicans “can no longer talk about the past and the past elections — no matter where you stand on that issue, no matter where you stand, it is over.” It wasn’t some kind of come-to-Jesus moment for Christie, though — he added at the time that “every minute that we spend talking about 2020 — while we’re wasting time doing that, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer are laying ruin to this country.” Democratic leaders obviously aren’t “laying ruin” to the U.S. — but in response, Trump focused on the part of Christie’s remarks regarding the 2020 election. Trump claimed that Christie “was just absolutely massacred by his statements that Republicans have to move on from the past, meaning the 2020 Election Fraud.” This destructive idiocy is what Trump remains focused upon while Americans deal with real problems.
