More Upcoming Subpoenas For Trump Allies Revealed By Jan. 6 Chairman

According to a new report from POLITICO, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) — who serves as the chairman of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot — “indicated that more subpoenas would be coming this week, though he declined to say whom they were targeting.” The committee has already subpoenaed a whole host of prominent allies of former President Trump, ranging from ex-White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany to former national security adviser Michael Flynn — the latter of whom said that he would “respond” to the committee’s demands. The committee has also targeted people involved in putting together the Women for America First rally in D.C. that immediately preceded — and provided the springboard for — the Capitol violence.

Separately, former top Trump adviser Steve Bannon has been dealing this week with consequences for defying a subpoena from the committee. He has been indicted on two counts of contempt of Congress, which could apparently land him in prison for up to two years, if convicted. Each count comes with up to a year behind bars.

Bannon, however, has remained defiant — he proclaimed after a court appearance on Monday that his case was going to constitute the “misdemeanor from hell” for Democratic leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and President Joe Biden, since he said that he’d be going “on the offense” — whatever that’s supposed to even mean. Bannon also referred to the criminal proceedings against him as mere “noise” in contrast to the “signal” represented by the activism in which he and his allies have been engaged. It’s all nonsense — these people talk like they’re secret agents in some global operation, but they’re just imbeciles due for reality checks.

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has also been among those resisting demands from the committee, but its leaders — including Thompson and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) — aren’t impressed. In a joint statement after he refused to show up for a deposition, they said that it’s “important to note that there’s nothing extraordinary about the Select Committee seeking the cooperation of a former senior administration official. Throughout U.S. history, the White House has provided Congress with testimony and information when it has been in the public interest. There couldn’t be a more compelling public interest than getting answers about an attack on our democracy.” Read more here.
