Audio Calls Linking Donald Trump To Insurrection Plotting Revealed

Hours before the final attack on the Capitol Building on January 6, what was Donald Trump doing? From the White House dining room window, he stood watching as the drama of his failed coup unfolded.  His phone was glued to his head.

Even as the planners of the January 6 failed coup met at the nearby Willard Hotel, Trump was still trying to work out a way how to escape becoming the biggest loser of all. He had just met with his former vice president Mike Pence, he told Bannon. And it did not look as if the former vice president would hand him the election at the joint session of Congress.

Trump described what had happened when he met with Pence in the Oval Office. In spite of the ex-president’s best efforts, his vice president told him that he could not, would not halt President Joe Biden’s certification process. According to The Guardian, Trump said of Pence:

‘He’s arrogant.’

Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) appeared on the Hugh Hewitt talk show, saying that Trump was “delighted” about the insurrection.

The night before, Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani called at least one of the Republican senators. He was imploring Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to help them keep Congress out of session. The plan at that stage was to object to 10 states  the newly-elected president had won.

Giuliani told Tuberville:

‘The only strategy we can follow is to object to numerous states and raise issues so that we get ourselves into tomorrow – ideally until the end of tomorrow.’

The previous president was making calls from his personal quarters the night before, too. Neither those nor those made in his Oval Room were definitely recorded and sent to the National Archives. They just showed where the calls went.

Those at the Willard included Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, and Steve Bannon, according to The Daily Beast:

‘Donald Trump reportedly made some frantic phone calls to his allies to ask for fresh ideas on how to delay the certification of his election defeat. [He] sought from the lawyers at the Willard ways to stop the joint session to ensure Biden would not be certified as president on 6 January.’

The House’s January 6 Select Committee has been investigating what went on in the nearby Willard Hotel. Those with the most direct knowledge of the communications have not honored their subpoenas.

Select Committee Chair Bennie Thompson released a statement that read:

‘[The committee wanted] every detail about their efforts to overturn the election, including who they were talking to in the White House and in Congress.’

Thompson’s statement continued:

‘[E]very detail about their efforts to overturn the election, including who they were talking to in the White House and in Congress.’
